Clare Large : The Female DJ Returns!!

Hey everyone,

I took a little bit of time out from DJing as I was playing out every weekend and lots more as well as my main residency at Cocoon in London. It’s been really nice to have time to focus on the label I run, Intelligent Audio and take time to go away at weekends or just stay in and do NOTHING on a Saturday night!!!

However! That was never going to last, so I’m officially looking for more gigs now. I’ve got a few in the pipeline and also might be going abroad for a bit too. Watch this space! Exciting times!

I feel SUPER pumped up and ready to go, I have so much good music to share with you all I finally caught up to the real world too and invested in Traktor Scratch – absolutely brilliant!!

I also have some tracks I did with my boyfriend Nigel Hayes coming out soon on Intelligent Audio, hopefully within a few months – we’re still finishing them off.

Deep Tech House Music | DJ Clare Large in Toronto, Canada

This is another picture taken of me playing deep tech house music at the Nation Club, in Toronto, Canada. This was my first North American tour and I went on to play in Ottawa, Vancouver and San Francisco this trip, and many more places in subsequent years.

I’ve always been fairly open minded with music, and coming to North America really exposed me to a lot of music that I otherwise might not have found. Just the whole North American vibe was super inspiring and I still hope to move over there one day.

Thanks so much to all my friends and acquaintances that have made all my trips to your part of the world possible, I could never have done it without you.

Deep Tech House Music | Clare Large in Nation, Toronto

Here I was playing Deep tech house music at a club called Nation in Toronto. WOW I used to love that catsuit. Still do actually, haha!

This was a good backroom gig at a biggish club, organised by Most Wanted Entertainement. Big US and Canadian DJs like Donald Glaude would play in the main room and I was part of the alternative.

I’ve always loved both main rooms AND back rooms and it was gigs like this that eventually inspired my to start my record label Intelligent Audio.

Deep Tech House Music | Clare Large playing in Quebec City, Canada

This was a really fun weekend, I was playing deep and tech house music, at an after party – or it might have been an after-after party… in Quebec City, Canada. This was in some park, there actually were a fair few people there on the other side – haha…

My then agent Bianka from Global Sound Canada which wasn’t even set up then, was playing at a HUGE warehouse party in Quebec City and there was abotu 12 of us all drove up to party and hang out, it was a brilliant taste of raving canadian style!

Techno and Tech House Music | Clare Large playing at Revolution, Canada

Here I was playing techno and tech house music, in a brilliant venue called the Purple Room.

The Purple Room is part of a massive club called Revolution, in Cambridge, near Toronto, Canada. Revolution is a huge top 40 club but the Purple Room bucks the trend and has been booking underground DJs for years… ranging from the San Diego deep house guys, to Donald Glaude and loads of others.

The crowd were really up for it and I used to be called Little Miss Large hence the poster! It was so inspiring to come to North America and see how other people partied, the subtle differences…. LOL like people breakdancing more!! Haha, good times….

Deep Tech House Music | Clare Large at Sister San Francisco again

Here I was playing more deep tech house music a lot of which I discovered in San Francisco. I remember I went to Daly City Records and I bought so much new vinyl I had to buy myself another new record crate!

Another favourite place in San Francisco, and in later years, Berkeley and LA, was Amoeba Music… WOW what a store… I have got some TOTAL gems there for 50cents…. I even bought some tunes that I already had, just out of respect for the artists who had made that awesome record…. and thinking that if whoever else had skipped over that vinyl in the bargain bins (I always went there first!) – it serves them right for not knowing what an awesome tune it was..

Haha, although sometimes I got it wrong – you can’t listen to stuff there – and sometimes I went a whole tour of carrying these potentially awesome tunes with me, before I got home and realised, they were, in fact, wack…. LOL…

Id say I had at least a 70% awesome hit rate though… wish I could say the same for listening to digital downloads now…

Deep Tech House Music | DJ Clare Large at Sister San Francisco

This was an awesome gig! I was playing deep and tech house and this was my first time in San Francisco, and I discovered SO MUCH new music while I was there.

I am forever grateful that my friend Annie – Dj Xanthoria – probably spelt that wrong – let me stay at her flat while she went to Burning Man – without that this leg of my first North American tour would never have been possible – Thanks Annie

San Francisco has been and continues to be an incredibly inspiring place for me, and Im sure for many others. I love the vibe there, and all of the deep tech house coming out of the city (along with loads of other fresh sounds) and the jazz clubs, everything – except maybe the foggy weather Big up to Forest Green too if you’re reading this xx

Techno and Tech House Music | DJing at Feel Good, San Francisco

I was playing techno and tech house music, on first, warming up for some huge American DJ names – this was my first time in San Francisco and I was SO excited about this gig!!

The gig was called Feel Good – a massive party, I think at City Hall… Was fun, but we didn’t stay – was too trancey even back then! I would LOVE to do some parties on that scale though – fair play to the promoters!

DJ Clare Large | Techno and Tech House Music

Clare Large playing techno and tech house at the Purple Room, at Revolution Nightclub, Cambridge near Toronto, Canada… This was a GREAT gig, and so cool to see it advertised in the paper!

This was set up by my good friend Robin, DJ Globalkiller – LOL – Revolution is a MASSIVE club in Waterloo about an hour from Toronto and its really super cheesy but they have a back room called the Purple Room, with really big guest DJs playing techno, tech house, jackin’ Chicago house, deep house, all kinds of wicked music…

So it was an honour to be a part of this…

Deep Tech House Music | Clare Large on the Sister San Francisco Website

This was the first time I went to San Francisco and I played some awesome parties… Sister SF being one of them with people like Annie, Xantoria, who let me stay with her and her 5 cats, albino python and rescue dog!

I was playing deep house, tech house, techno, breaks, chill out music, broken beat, and discovering a lot more than the hard house I’d been into a few years previously in the UK!!

Super great bunch of chicks, the Sister SF gals, was honoured to be a part of it Annie if you ever read this, get in touch!
